Performance and Impact of MSME Schemes in North-East India: A Study of PMEGP and Infrastructure Development Initiatives
Abstract
This paper seeks to examine the performance of MSME scheme in North-East India and particularly the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Program (PMEGP) and initiatives in infrastructural development. This will be done in the light of their effect on entrepreneurship, creation of employment opportunities and development of the region as a whole. From the findings of this study, it can be concluded that PMEGP has been instrumental in fostering self-employment and nurturing micro-enterprises in the region. These attempts for the infrastructural development have been successful in improving the productivity of the industries, marketability and efficiency of the businesses. But challenges such as poor infrastructure, absence of finance facilities, insufficient skilled labour and geographical remoteness still create obstacles in achieving the best use of MSMEs. Based on this study, it is found that there are positive impacts of the MSME policies on inclusive development of the region, which needs to be further reinforced with some appropriate policies. Keywords
