Abstract

In the realm of software utilization, the literature provides a foundational understanding of various software packages and their roles in cost management, yet it lacks exploration into current utilization statistics. This study investigates the utilization of cost management software by quantity surveyors in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, addressing the critical role of technology in the construction industry. The research adopts a quantitative approach via a survey, administered to Quantity Surveyors, to explore demographic profiles and software usage patterns. The findings show that Plan swift and Microsoft Excel are the prevalent choices across project types and scales, with 48% of respondents utilizing these tools. Notably, Plan swift has a usage duration of 1-5 years for 66% of participants, signifying its recent integration into Quantity Surveying practices. This extends the literature review, enriching it with specific insights into the most utilized tools and their duration of use, aligning by underscoring the significance of software while providing more nuanced information. Recommendations for improving Quantity Surveying software encompass a holistic approach. User-friendly interfaces, thorough training courses, frequent updates, and attentive customer service should be developers' top priorities. Enhancing integration capabilities, aligning with changing regulations, and providing cost-effective licensing options are crucial. Collaboration features for team-based work, optimization of software performance, and systematic user feedback mechanisms will ensure continuous improvement. These measures aim to elevate the software's utility in meeting the diverse needs of Quantity Surveyors, reflecting an evolving and more receptive landscape in the industry.
