Impact of AI on Organisational culture: A systematic review
Abstract
Organisation processes, decision-making, and even employee work practices are increasingly revolutionized by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Organisational values, behaviours, communication and relationships are changing with the adoption of machine learning, generative AI, and intelligent automation. The implementation of AI-led transformation relies heavily on the organization's culture, influencing how workers embrace and adopt the changes. This systemactic review focuses on the impact of AI on the change within organisations specifically in relation to the elements of innovation, behaviour, communication and collaboration, organisational learning, leadership, autonomy and trust. Top themes and benefits and challenges as related to the use of AI were identified by undertaking more systematic literature search and screening. Based on the review, AI can increase innovation, productivity, organisational learning, collaboration and data-driven decision making. But worries about job insecurity, lack of employee buy-in, diminished autonomy, algorithmic bias, as well as surveillance and transparency issues, could impact organisational culture negatively. Overall, these findings underscore the significance of workplace leadership, employee engagement, and effectively managing AI ethics to build trust and foster responsible AI application. The review illuminates the gaps in research and proposes future research areas, including those focused on generative AI, as well as an exploration of changes over longer time horizons and employee-centered approaches to AI uptake. Keywords
